Preparing for Adulthood in Practice

How councils are embedding better planning before transition.

Thursday 6th August  |  10:30-11:30
Virtual Event on MS Teams

A space for honest conversation and shared learning

This first session in our SEND Community Practice Network brings together our community of local authorities to explore how councils are approaching Preparing for Adulthood in practice. This will be a structured space to share challenges, compare approaches, and learn from each other.

Together we'll explore what good Preparing for Adulthood looks like beyond statutory compliance, how councils are embedding it throughout the EHCP journey, and where the biggest opportunities and barriers remain. We'll also reflect on how stronger planning can support better outcomes for young people and smoother transitions into adulthood.

What you'll gain

You will leave the session with:

  • A clearer understanding of how other councils are embedding Preparing for Adulthood across their SEND services.
  • Insight into common challenges and practical approaches being used by peers.
  • Ideas you can take back to strengthen planning, outcomes and practice in your own authority.
  • The opportunity to connect with colleagues facing similar challenges.

How the session works

This is a small, discussion-based session designed to encourage open and practical conversation.

  • Introductions
Meet fellow participants with the opportunity to share a quick snapshot of your current context.
  • Quick-fire prompts
Capture your initial thoughts on key challenges and approaches using a shared digital whiteboard in small groups.
  • Small group discussions

  • Whole group reflections
We'll share key themes and insights across each of the groups.
  • Close and next steps
Shape future sessions and continue the conversation.
